Ensiling is one of the methods of storing and fermenting fodder which can be fed to domesticated livestock. Ensiling can be applied to any type of cultivated plant, yet there are some specific plants that are used more often due to a variety of factors. There are two basic preservation methods, cooling and freezing, and preservation by heat. During the ensiling process, through the activity of microorganisms the silage undergoes anaerobic fermentation, which leads to the production of a better quality fodder, as well as a better preservation. Silos for silage are the facilities in which the crops ferment and where they are stored until feeding. The types of silos vary and over time have advanced. There are two major types of silos depending on their construction; bunker and tower silos. It’s important to mention that there are other types of silos that are not used as frequently as the ones mentioned above. Ensiling can be applied to any type of cultivated plant, in this thesis, however, emphasis will be placed on the two large plant categories, legumes and grasses. The plants that belong in these categories are separated depending on their growing season, either in winter or summer. In many cases plants from these two categories are used together as companion plants for a better result. The legumes that are mainly used are alfalfa and vetch, whereas corn and barley are popular from the grasses.
