One of the most serious environmental problems is the pollution with heavy metals, because they are not biodegradable and their presence in waters leads to bioaccumulation in living organisms, causing health problems. Various techniques have been used for heavy metal removal including adsorption. Solid waste management is also a challenge. In the present study the use of different coffee wastes, such as greek coffee, filter coffee and espresso, as biosorbents for the removal of heavy metals, such as lead, cadmium and manganese, from waters was investigated. The coffee residues were washed with distilled water to remove all soluble substances, dried, crushed and sieved. Sorption experiments were performed in a batch system in a concentration range from 25 to 200 mg/L, as a function of pH and ionic strength. Metal concentration was measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The experimental data were fitted to Henry, Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The fitting was evaluated according to the determined coefficients, R2.
