Τhis assignment attempts to study the occurrence of the occupational burnout
syndrome in the education sector of physical education teachers and to investigate the
importance of gender, age, and organizational factors in the occurrence of this syndrome as
well as its consequences. The survey concerns the participation of 123 teachers serving in
public schools in central Macedonia as permanent or associate teachers, and was conducted
during the months of April to June 2019.
All participants completed a questionnaire, which was sent to them by e mail and was
based on two respected reading tools, most commonly used to investigate occupational
burnout internationally. These are the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) , 1981; 1986) and
the Employee Satisfaction Inventory, ESI (Koustelios, 1991; Koustelios & Bagiatis, 1997).
In addition to the questions based on the aforementioned questionnaires, five more questions
were included by the researcher that were tested for their reliability and validity.
The results of the study showed that physical education teachers experience low levels
of burnout and on average, they consider that the most important factor in the appearance of
occupational stress and exhaustion is working conditions (logistics, indoor gym, weather
conditions) in addition to their individual characteristics, related to their age and body weight
in terms of performance..
Subsequently, the tree dimensions of occypational burnout syndrome were correlated
with gender, age, and organizational factors that contributed to its appearance. In conclusion,
gender and age variarbles were not statistically correlated whith the occurrence of
occupational burnout. On the contrary, the factors of ambiguity and role conflict were highly
positively correlated with the dimension of depersonalization, and job satisfaction was
negatively correlated whith emotional exhaustion.
Finally, ways are taken to prevent severe occupational burnout and physical education
teachers to be able to perform their most important work more constructively.
