The Education for Sustainability constitutes a huge challenge and a great
opportunity so that schools can play an important role in transmitting sustainability
values, attitudes and behavior practices to the next generation, as young people will
be responsible for future decision-making procedures. This endeavor demands from
the school leaders to have a wider view on change and progress, considering the
school, the society and the environment as interconnected values.
The aim of this study is the expansion of the good practice adopted by the primary
school directors, according to the quality metrics of a sustainable school, as well as
the formation of conclusions concerning the role of the director/leader in transforming
the school from conventional to sustainable. In order to investigate this issue, a
quantitative study was selected in the form of an online questionnaire, with a sample
consisted of 178 educational units of the Directorate of Primary Education of Western
Thessaloniki, and the data analysis was conducted using the SPSS statistical package
(V25).
According to the results, satisfactory directive practices are currently promoted at
school units that correspond to educational, social and environmental metrics of a
sustainable school, and which could be further improved. However, the study shows
that an important factor towards this direction should be the training of the school
directors and teachers towards sustainability, the inclusion of all involved parties in
the decision-making process and the teaching of democratic values, the collaboration
with social institutions, the improvement of the environmental metrics of a
sustainable school, the complete integration of the Education for Sustainability across
the whole spectrum of the study program and the school culture in general, building
collaborations and strategic partnerships and, finally, the application of evaluation and
feedback systems.
