The multicultural profile of modern Greek society that has been shaped for the last 30 years
and the arrival of many refugees and immigrants, of various national and cultural backgrounds,
make it urgent to offer to these people their respective intercultural educational support.
This paper analyzes the principles and models of managing cultural diversity as well as the
key aspects of intercultural education. Reference is made to Vocational education, the flow and
preference shown to it by students from immigrant backgrounds, as well as to the structures of
intercultural education in our country.
In the research part of the work, I tried to approach the views of the Vocational Education
teachers regarding intercultural education in the prefecture of Larissa. The role of the teacher
and the educational / teaching practices, the relationship of immigrant students with indigenous
students, the relationship of immigrant parents with the school, the performance of immigrant
pupils as well as the teacher training needs were investigated. Finally, it is attempting to lay the
groundwork for future targeted and broader Pan-Hellenic research into the needs of intercultural
education and the relative potential training of teachers in specific educational structures (such
as Vocational Education), on which by recent research that has been conducted, there appears
to be a systematic preference for and a growing presence of returning and foreign students. The
survey was conducted in September 2019. 143 questionnaires were collected (out of the 10
EPALs of Larissa Prefecture) which represent 36.95% of the total number of Vocational
Education Teachers in Larissa Prefecture.
The survey concluded that immigrant parents are keenly interested in the progress of their
children. It also showed the positive sign of indigenous students vis-à-vis immigrants in relation
to each other. Migrant students' performance is only in courses where linguistic competence is
not necessary. We also see that students' performance is related to learning the dominant
language and the need for immediate training of teachers in intercultural education.
