Τουμπέλης, Παναγιώτης

Modern education has been greatly differentiated than the education of the previous century. The two changes which have been introduced in the daily life of education due to the needs and demands of society itself and have influenced modern education are Technology and Interculturalism. Technology is no longer only for the privileged but an accessible necessity to almost all citizens. It affects our lives in various aspects: the financial, social, cultural, entertaining and definitely the educational ones. Since the end of World War II up to this day, the European countries have not only been attracting but also producing large amounts of population because of both internal and external immigration. The national, cultural and religious borders have been abandoned and Interculturalism is the principal model not only when it comes to society but also to education. Therefore, it is important to examine how these two factors have influenced one another and the educational system, what are the benefits of this interaction, the problems that might have appeared and what the opinion of the teachers are on the prerequisites that need to be present for the best possible results. The research has been conducted in an area that has vivid features of Interculturalism and in school units which could have been characterized as Intercultural ones since they have a large number of students with different mother tongues. This is a fact that adds to the value of this research. The approach to the research questions has been through theoretical analysis and survey. The theoretical analysis has been based on a literature review and the research has been a quantitative one through a questionnaire. Furthermore, there has been a study on teachers’ attitudes, opinions and level of training on ICT and Intercultural Education and the combination of the two as well as the results of their practice in an intercultural school class. According to the findings of the research, teachers’ attitude towards Intrecultural training is positive, even though their relative training and skills might be inefficient, since they acknowledge the help that modern innovative practices such as ICT can offer to intercultural school classes and they seek support to respond to the highly demanding duties of our times in the most effective way.
