Introduction: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), globally and in Greece as well, is expected to rise in the next few years. An increasing trend in students with diabetes mellitus I (DM I) will exist as well. Because of that, the teachers of every school unit will have to learn about DM I. Also, there will must be qualified staff in school units for the support of students. Method: A research was conducted among 118 teachers of secondary education schools of Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki. For the evaluation of the knowledge level on DM I, they were asked to complete a questionnaire consisted of 34 questions, organized in 3 sections. Results: The level of knowledge of teachers was very good and their knowledge and attitudes were statistically significant and some of their socio-demographic characteristics. Almost all candidates consider the presence of a school nurse in every educational unit necessary. Conclusion: The levels of knowledge on DM I of the teachers of secondary education schools is considered good. However, for the better support of the diabetic students, will have to increase these levels of knowledge with seminars based on DM. Also the existence of school nurses in school units with diabetic students is crucial.
