This thesis aims to present Intercultural Education from a theoretical standpoint, the intercultural models proposed for the educational system of this decade, as well as the basic principles and assumptions that these models adopt. It also attempts a critical understanding of the different approaches of Intercultural Education.An important part of the international and domestic legislation concerning the education of nonnative pupils and the promotion of Human Rights is outlined. The institutional introduction and validation at the international and domestic level of the necessity for the intercultural direction of educational policy is presented. An important factor is the teaching process. Therefore, the key role of innovative teaching approaches in the practical application of intercultural education, as well as the importance of educational innovation, is emphasized in a general effort to intercultural direction of formal curricula.
