Διερεύνηση της επίδρασης της κατάθλιψης και της διαχείρισης της νόσου στην ποιότητα ζωής ασθενών που υποβάλλονται σε κλασική και παρατεταμένη αιμοκάθαρση (Master thesis)

The paper aims to investigate the impact of depression and management of the disease on
the quality of life of patients undergoing classic and prolonged dialysis. This is a
comparative study of patients with and without diabetes mellitus who undergo classic and
prolonged hemodialysis in the Dialysis Unit of Pella in Skydra, Pella. The research tool of
the study consists of a questionnaire with the demographic data (gender, age, family and
professional status, educational level), clinical parameters (duration and type of primary
disease, duration of diabetes mellitus, type of antidiabetic treatment, dialysis adequacy),
the short form of the World Health Organization's Quality of Life Instrument, the Hospital
Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease Scale.
Prolonged hemodialysis lasting for 5 to 7 hours is a new pioneering trend in nephrology
care. The results of the study have shown that patients on hemodialysis less than three
years, experience depression and anxiety especially those in classical hemodialysis and
men. Also, the results showed that the quality of life of respondents is affected by
hemodialysis. The type of hemodialysis and the existence of diabetes also affect the level
of depression and anxiety. Correspondingly, patients with DM reported particularly higher
anxiety (8,17, ± 4,27) versus non-diabetics (5,96, ± 3,95), as well as higher depression
levels (9,14, ± 3.96) compared to non-diabetics (6.32 ± 3.87) (p=.014 and p=.001,
respectively). In particular, there appears to be a statistically significant linear correlation
of sex with the anxiety and depression scale (p = 0.024 and p = 0.015, respectively) and the
educational level with the depression scale (p = 0.025). The collaboration of the
xi
interdisciplinary nephrology team (nephrologist, renal nurse, psychologist, social worker
and dietitian) is imperative in achieving patient's smooth adaptation to the new reality of
renal disease and ensuring a satisfactory level of quality of life.
